[ Press Release by Occupy Central with Love & Peace issued on 9.9.2014 ]

Shave for Democracy

The Mid-Autumn Festival has a tradition of civil disobedience in Chinese history. Today, democracy in Hong Kong has regressed at an alarming rate. In defiance of the Central Government’s denial of Hong Kong people’s democratic rights and demands for genuine universal suffrage, we pledged an era of peaceful resistance: We will continue fighting for democracy and a high degree of autonomy that has been promised to Hong Kong.

Today, the day after Mid-Autumn Festival, Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP) organizers and 43 supporters shave their heads in public.

Organizer Benny Tai says, “The decision made by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress did not allow Hong Kong people to have genuine universal suffrage. We shave our heads to express our determination to continue the fight for democracy. There is no turning back.”

The 43 supporters joining the head shave include Vice Chairperson of the Civic Party Tanya Chan, Former Chairman of the Democratic Party Yeung Sum, Legislative Councillor Wu Chi-wai, lawyer Herman Tang, cartoonist Zunzi Wong, performance artist Au Yeung Tung, teacher, registered social worker, former TV producer, financial consultant, civil servant, pastor, secondary school student, university student, post-graduate student, driver, worker, businessman, retired person, etc. Among these 43 supporters, 2 are women.

Moreover, about 100 OCLP supporters joined the call of Civil Human Rights Front’s Yellow Ribbon Campaign today and made yellow ribbons. After the head shave, the OCLP organizers and supporters distributed the yellow ribbons in the city and spread the message of the Yellow Ribbon Campaign: "We will not back down, and we will march towards hope".
